Tell HN: I made $1000 with my app and now making $500/mo
Edit: Wow #1 on HN. Y'all are making my day. Hey HN, I'm mostly a lurker on HN who's always super inspired by other people's small project that end-up making money. (Huge fan of Ben Stoke's Tiny Project [0]) After being burnt-out in big tech, I decided to write my own weightlifting app and set myself a humble goal of reaching $1000 in total proceeds. See [1] for my initial launch post. I've now surpassed that goal and am now making about 500$/mo by selling premium features in the app. Android version is coming soon too. Doing the whole thing end-to-end (code, launch, marketing, support) was super gratifying and taught me a whole lot. I have to admit that I got almost teary eyed the first time someone bought one of my IAPs. I'm not making a killing out of the app, and that was never the goal. But the personal satisfaction I got out of it was worth e

Ask HN: Elevator Pitch for a Polymath?
Dear HN, So far in my (admittedly fairly short, at 7--8 years experience) professional life, I've always entered employment as a software engineer. However, I study a lot of things outside of this: leadership, economics, site reliability engineering, writing, queuing theory, product development, extreme value theory, lean, survival analysis, etc. This means when I find the right employer, my job often extends well beyond the programming I was hired to do, into things like: - statistical analysis of customer health, - cross-functional KPIs for alignment on current priorities over a diverse set of departments, - improving development methodologies and workflows, - adjusting on-call compensation to improve join rates and employee satisfaction, and more. Over and over I encounter the advice to "come up with and practise the elevator pitch of what you do". I struggle with this.

Hey HN! We’re Jeff and Michael, and we’re building Infra ( https://github.com/infrahq/infra ). Infra is a tool for managing access to cloud infrastructure. We’re starting with Kubernetes and have a roadmap to support Postgres, SSH and much more. Michael and I were the co-founders of Kitematic, an easy way to run Docker on the desktop. We sold the company to Docker and built Docker Desktop while there. After that, we worked on Infra App, a Kubernetes client for Mac, Windows and Linux. Between what users told us and our time at Docker, it became obvious that managing infrastructure access was becoming increasingly painful. Many larger teams don’t give access to developers, while smaller teams often just grant admin access to everyone. Teams in between either build extensive tooling in-house (e.g. Segment’s Access Service), or they end up spending a lot of time manually

Imagine you're going to build a new SaaS app. Would you think of building it on a headless CMS? Probably not. To devs, "content management system" is usually a swear word. If a team of engineers gets assigned a CMS project, it's less than thrilling. Engineers want to avoid roadblocks, write code, and build things they're proud of—but existing CMS's get in the way of that left and right with their third-party integrations, point-and-click schema designers, code generation, etc. Rather, you'd build your backend on an app framew

Hey HN, we are Shane and Mikey, the co-founders of Boostly ( https://boostly.com ). Boostly is a text marketing and feedback system for restaurants that works seamlessly with their point of sale, online ordering, and phone systems. Restaurants live or die based on their ability to keep their customers coming back. However, with the rise of the third party delivery platforms, which charge 20%-35% commission on each transaction, restaurants are afraid that many of their customers will stop ordering directly from the restaurant (even if the restaurant can do their own delivery), and wipe out their small profit margins. The delivery platforms also maintain ownership of the customer data. They know how valuable this is for marketing, whereas the typical restaurant owner is focused on the food and service, as they should be—and they miss out on being able to communicate directly with

Hey HN, it’s been 8 years since I posted on here about the launch of my Japanese dictionary app Nihongo [0] and I’m finally back with a new app: Nihongo Lessons! Think of Nihongo Lessons as the textbook to Nihongo’s dictionary. It’s an app for learning Japanese, specifically made for learners who are serious about becoming fluent, and want a guided set of content that will help them efficiently acquire vocabulary and grammar. The project came about when Adam Shapiro of Japanese Level Up (Jalup) [1] announced last April that he was shutting Jalup down. As a fan of Adam’s work I was bummed to hear the news, but realized I actually might be one of the few people in the world in a position to keep his work alive. So I reached out, and we came up with a deal where I would sell Jalup content in my apps. Originally it was envisioned as an add-on to Nihongo, but after starting to build this out

Hi HN, we’re Dane and Geoff, the founders of Spoken ( https://www.spoken.io/ ). We make it easy to find the lowest price for any furniture item across all big stores. Buying physical things on the internet is hard. You have to quality-check a product without touching it, double-check dimensions for where the thing will go, and evaluate a seller's credibility, often with little data. But buying furniture online is a special case of hard, because the market is deliberately deceptive. Furniture sellers actively prevent consumers from easily finding the same item at other stores, or under other names, because this allows them to charge more. The sellers get to name the products and they name them in confusing ways to facilitate price discriminaton. Our teams ramped up on investment into testing, especially end-to-end tests (via spinning up a headless browser in CI and testing as an end user), but it quickly became clear that these were incredibly expensive to build and maintain, especially as test suite and application complexity grow.
