My project has no ORM, and now that other developers are coming on it is hard to work with - the readability of an ORM far surpasses writing your own queries and I can see that the benefits far outweigh the cons. And what's not to say you can't write your own lightweight ORM to abstract the database if you can't find a tool that suits your goals - and as always it all depends on your use case.
