The Playback Rewrite
> [!NOTE] > The description of this issue is outdated and mainly kept for archival purposes. The new playback code is already in use for all audio playback (mainly music) and a lot of work has been backported to the old video player over the years. Many tasks are completed but haven't been marked and many more tasks have been completed that are not even listed. **Progress is well underway.** > > **If you have any questions you can reach out by creating an discussion here on the GitHub repository or join our Android development Matrix chat (listed at jellyfin.org/contact). Please refrain from commenting on this issue, comments will be marked off-topic as mentioned at the end of this issue description.** > > # Keep in mind that Jellyfin is fully worked on by **volunteers**. <details> <summary><h1>:books: Old contents</h1></summary> # :rocket: What is **The Playback Rewrite**? The goal of the rewrite is to create new playback code from scratch for video playback, audio playback and live tv. The new code should be easier to maintain and be prepared for a migration to Jellyfin 11. New features like SyncPlay can be added without much trouble. All code is Kotlin-first and uses the new SDK. It should be used by all our official Android apps for consistent behavior between (Android-) devices when playing files. The rewrite is a **very long** project because I'm just one person volunteering to work on Jellyfin in my spare time. There is no hard deadline or specific version goal
