Support connecting to remote devcontainers (devcontainer on remote host)
### Discussed in https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/discussions/56252 <div type='discussions-op-text'> Originally posted by **lieeesson** May 8, 2026 ## Question / Feature Request Is there a plan or timeline for Zed to support connecting to a **remote devcontainer**? Currently it seems devcontainer support is focused on local containers, but many developers work with devcontainers running on remote servers (via SSH port forwarding, etc.). ## Use Case - Devcontainer runs on a remote machine (e.g., a powerful dev server accessed via SSH) - The local machine is a less powerful laptop or device - Developer wants to use Zed locally but have the devcontainer environment on the remote side - Similar to VS Code's "Attach Shell to Remote" or JetBrains' remote devcontainer support ## What I'm Looking For Something like: Zed connects to a remote host and attaches to an already-running devcontainer there. Either: 1. Zed connects via SSH to remote, then uses remote Docker/podman CLI to find/devcontainer 2. Or a devcontainer config option to specify a remote Docker host ## Workaround I've Tried SSH port forwarding of the Docker socket, but Zed detects it's not a local socket and refuses to use it. --- I'm happy to help test or contribute if this is on the roadmap! Just wanted to ask before diving in. ♡</div>
